Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Speech

During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
