Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
