A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
