The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
