RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
