Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
